This time I chose "The Lovely Bones" by Alice Sebold (fiction). I decided on this book because of it's good reviews and because I thought it would be interesting to read a book and then go see the movie based on it. I have yet to see the movie, but plan to soon.

"The Lovely Bones works as an odd yet affecting coming-of-age story. Susie struggles to accept her death while still clinging to the lost world of the living, following her family's dramas over the years like an episode of My So-Called Afterlife. Her family disintegrates in their grief: her father becomes determined to find her killer, her mother withdraws, her little brother Buckley attempts to make sense of the new hole in his family, and her younger sister Lindsey moves through the milestone events of her teenage and young adult years with Susie riding spiritual shotgun. Random acts and missed opportunities run throughout the book--Susie recalls her sole kiss with a boy on Earth as "like an accident--a beautiful gasoline rainbow." Though sentimental at times, The Lovely Bones is a moving exploration of loss and mourning that ultimately puts its faith in the living and that is made even more powerful by a cast of convincing characters. Sebold orchestrates a big finish, and though things tend to wrap up a little too well for everyone in the end, one can only imagine (or hope) that heaven is indeed a place filled with such happy endings. --Brad Thomas Parsons "
MY THOUGHTS
While I did enjoy the book, I did have some issues with it. Primarily, I didn't like all of the flashbacks (which often seemed like flashbacks within a flashback). At times it seemed like that was what the book was mostly - flashbacks....and all so out of order. Many seemed unimportant and could have been left out. There were things sometimes mentioned that you thought would later be developed or explained - but nada. The story was supposed to be from the viewpoint of a murdered 14 year old watching her family/friends on earth. Some of her 'observations' didn't seem plausible as coming from an observer - let alone a 14 year old. Overall, I did still enjoy the book but I have a feeling I might like the movie better.Kellyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14769522901369890587noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-451780604538703785.post-27503749667506652442010-01-24T16:50:00.002-05:002010-01-24T16:50:50.697-05:00Why it's important to marry a good speller...Kellyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14769522901369890587noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-451780604538703785.post-13890700075533674652010-01-08T11:28:00.001-05:002010-01-08T17:09:36.509-05:00New Year ResolutionI've been doing pretty good at my goal of reading more so far, and I decided to keep at it because I am really enjoying it. One of my resolutions for 2010 is to read at least 10 books (hopefully more). I've been choosing books that are on bestseller lists and that get 4-5 star reviews. I usually read self-help, self-improvement, inspirational type books. But I want to start branching out and reading different genres. So I chose a fiction book called "The Help" by Kathyrn Stockett. I just finished it last night and I was kind of bummed that it was over. I wanted there to be more because I really enjoyed it a lot.

From Publishers Weekly: What perfect timing for this optimistic, uplifting debut novel (and maiden publication of Amy Einhorn's new imprint) set during the nascent civil rights movement in Jackson, Miss., where black women were trusted to raise white children but not to polish the household silver. Eugenia Skeeter Phelan is just home from college in 1962, and, anxious to become a writer, is advised to hone her chops by writing about what disturbs you. The budding social activist begins to collect the stories of the black women on whom the country club sets relies and mistrusts enlisting the help of Aibileen, a maid who's raised 17 children, and Aibileen's best friend Minny, who's found herself unemployed more than a few times after mouthing off to her white employers. The book Skeeter puts together based on their stories is scathing and shocking, bringing pride and hope to the black community, while giving Skeeter the courage to break down her personal boundaries and pursue her dreams. Assured and layered, full of heart and history, this one has bestseller written all over it.Kellyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14769522901369890587noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-451780604538703785.post-8364020958064822482010-01-06T10:36:00.001-05:002010-01-06T10:38:25.054-05:00Handbook for 2010Health:

"When Randy Pausch, a computer science professor at Carnegie Mellon, was asked to give such a lecture, he didn't have to imagine it as his last, since he had recently been diagnosed with terminal cancer. But the lecture he gave--"Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams"--wasn't about dying. It was about the importance of overcoming obstacles, of enabling the dreams of others, of seizing every moment (because "time is all you have...and you may find one day that you have less than you think"). It was a summation of everything Randy had come to believe. It was about living."

Another good one I'd recommend. I can see why it was a national besteseller. It's a quick read, but filled with humor, intelligence and good advice.
It has been many years since I actually read an entire book. Since setting that goal I have completed 3 books and am on my 4th. I am really enjoying the books I've been reading and am glad to have picked up this hobby.

* The first book I chose to read was "29 Gifts: How a Month of Giving Can Change Your Life" by Cami Walker (memoir).

"At age 33 Cami Walker was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and the life she knew changed forever. Then, as a remedy for her condition, she received an uncommon prescription from a friend, an African medicine woman named Mbali Creazzo: Give away 29 gifts in 29 days. Cami was amazed by what unfolded during her month-long journey."

As a result of her experience and book, an entire online movement was started all over the world - a movement aimed at reviving the giving spirit. I am just about to complete my first 29 day cycle of giving! http://www.29gifts.org/

* Next I read "The Shack" by WM P. Young (spiritual fiction)

"Mackenzie Allen Philips' youngest daughter, Missy, has been abducted during a family vacation and evidence that she may have been brutally murdered is found in an abandoned shack deep in the Oregon wilderness. Four years later in the midst of his Great Sadness, Mack receives a suspicious note, apparently from God, inviting him back to that shack for a weekend. Against his better judgment he arrives at the shack on a wintry afternoon and walks back into his darkest nightmare. What he finds there will change Mack's world forever. In a world where religion seems to grow increasingly irrelevant "The Shack" wrestles with the timeless question, "Where is God in a world so filled with unspeakable pain?" The answers Mack gets will astound you and perhaps transform you as much as it did him."

I loved this book! So much I went out and bought 7 copies of it it share with others and I plan to read it again soon.

* More recently I finished "The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom, A Toltec Wisdom Book" by Don Miguel Riuz (religion/spirituality)

"Sit at the foot of a native elder and listen as great wisdom of days long past is passed down. In The Four Agreements shamanic teacher and healer Don Miguel Ruiz exposes self-limiting beliefs and presents a simple yet effective code of personal conduct learned from his Toltec ancestors. Full of grace and simple truth, this handsomely designed book makes a lovely gift for anyone making an elementary change in life, and it reads in a voice that you would expect from an indigenous shaman. The four agreements are these: Be impeccable with your word. Don't take anything personally. Don't make assumptions. Always do your best. It's the how and why one should do these things that make The Four Agreements worth reading and remembering. "

I really enjoyed this book as well. It was a quick read as the book is small and short. But I really liked how simple it was...not too simple, but the author did a good job of explaining and illustrating the thinking behind each of the four agreements.

It is my goal to continue reading at least every day. To help me along (and to be a little more 'green'), I invested in a digital reader (aka ebook reader). After much research I decided not to go with the well known Kindle reader by Amazon. I just do not like the fact that Amazon.com uses a proprietary format for the ebooks such that only people who own a Kindle can buy their books. I decided to go with a Sony reader instead. Sony is one of the companies that offers ebooks in an open format that can be used by nearly every reader. But even still I am not limited to just buying books from Sony. There are tons and tons of online ebook stores out there for me to shop from.

I settled on the Sony Touch Edition PRS-600 reader. It offers a dictionary function so that I can look up any word whenever I want. I can highlight parts of the book to refer to later and even make handwritten notes or drawings. It's about the size (length and height) of a paperback book. It is very thin and easy to carry in my purse. Ebooks cost less than new hardbook/paperback books, take up less room, are more 'green' and you can even get free ebooks online or borrow them from your library. I love it and highly recommend one.
It is a site that helps you to acheive goals that you set for yourself. At first I didn't think I would like it, but it turns out that it has been very helpful to me.

All you do is type in a goal that you have on Your Life List. It keeps a list of all of your goals (up to 43) for you. When you set a goal, the site will tell you how many other people have the same goal as you. This is pretty cool because you can then go read more about their goal and how other people have acheived that goal (great resource for ideas to help you be successful). You can share with others how you accomplished goals and you can pass out and receive virtual 'cheers' for support as well. You can also add entries to update the status of your progress.

Having the goals in writing in a place that I can go and refer to everyday has been very helpful. I have a few goals that are almost ready to be marked as done, and I'm happy to say I just crossed one totally off the list - to read more. Yay! You can also keep a seperate list of your 2010 New Year's Resolutions.

Check it out: http://www.43things.com/

There are also some other sites by the same company that are kind of fun as well. They all have a similiar theme - you create a list, mark your progress on the list, compare your lists with others, etc.:

http://www.43places.com/ Keep of list of where you have visited and where you would like to visit

http://www.43people.com/ List all the people you have met and would like to meet

http://www.allconsuming.com/
http://www.listsofbests.com/

Why 43? I dunno. I read it somewhere on the site, but can't remember the explanation....Kellyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14769522901369890587noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-451780604538703785.post-28605632590391658542009-12-05T13:23:00.003-05:002009-12-05T13:24:45.726-05:00This is soooo cute!Kellyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14769522901369890587noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-451780604538703785.post-67002230979208894072009-11-16T11:42:00.003-05:002009-12-14T18:33:26.846-05:00Give H2OPlease share this with others. :)
My list to Santa this year is quite different from usual. Rather than Christmas or birthday gifts/cards to me, I ask that my loved ones instead consider donating to this wonderful cause called "charity: water". Any amount will make a difference. No gift is too small. Even forwarding this on to others would be wonderful.Kellyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14769522901369890587noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-451780604538703785.post-19927813584665047242009-11-15T21:11:00.010-05:002009-11-15T22:47:27.864-05:00Everyone needs a kiss from a WalrusYesterday I cashed in on the "Free behind the scences tour of the walrus exhibit at the Indy Zoo" that I won a couple of months ago. I took along my parents, my friends Sue, Greg and Joe. We got to met all 3 walruses up close: Aurora, Nereus (star of Animal Planet's "Growing Up Walrus") and Brutus. We spent most of our time with Brutus....all 2700 pounds of him. We each got to feed him fish through a tube. This was just so you could feel his suction power as he sucked the fish out of your hand, through the tube and into his mouth.

Then we got to hand feed him even more fish.

We were each given the chance to receive a kiss on our hand from the big guy.

We got to give him a little back rub as well.

Finally, we each got our picture taken with Brutus - he even smiled for the camera!

Little Nereus was so jealous of all the attention that Brutus was getting from us. He was constantly trying to steal the show - he kept making noises and funny sounds ...and just kept looking so darn cute. Aurora was a perfect lady and just chilled out sucking on her flipper.

Getting to see them so close was amazing - who knew that walruses actually have toenails!!! They also have hairy backs. I expected them to feel like wet elephants, but I was wrong. They feel very, very smooth. you don't feel the hair at all. Something very interesting that we learned is that the natural sounds made by walruses are often used in movies like Jurassic Park as dinosaur sounds.

This was a real treat and a great experience. I am so glad to have been able to share it with my family and friends. Pictured below: my dad Glenn, my mom Jo and my friends Greg, Joe and Sue.
What have I gotten myself into? I always swore that a blog just wasn't for me and there was no way that I would ever have one. But my desire to play around and learn how to make a simple blog won out...and here I am. I hated the idea of deleting it after I was done experimenting - so looks like I'm keeping it for now. My blog is simply going to be kind of a journal, and everything on it will be a reflection of me and what I'm all about.

So if you found yourself bored and here...check out my favorites off to the right.

Whew! First post is now out of the way!Kellyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14769522901369890587noreply@blogger.com7
